Yohualichan comes from the Nahuatl language and means "Place of the night." Its first inhabitants speak Totonac, so it is very likely that the current name is a translation of another older but with the same meaning.
The area is of particular interest because its traces confirm the
presence of dominant groups in the coastal region of the mountains;
Yohualichan they should have left before the advance of belligerent
groups of central Mexico.
The site was used in ceremonies and certainly had an influence on others
as it was stated as a point of reunion for some kind of cult, even after
its abandonment occurred, probably for centuries XI and XII.
The Totonacas Yohualichan had set in early Classic period (200-900 AD)
as an advanced group of El Tajin, Veracruz, which is held in a straight
line, approximately 60 kilometers. The most popular area of El Tajin
with influence is one that is similar to the monumental architecture of
the metropolis.
