Cantona was built on a basaltic volcano Jalapasco stroke, and their structures were built on volcanic rock, give it an appearance sui generis. The landscape is dominated by a myriad of desert plants that predominate among yuccas, maguey, cactus and shovels, as well as some conifers that restaurateurs have sought to preserve. The buildings were taking advantage of the steep terrain, without saving a symmetry such as that presented, for example, Teotihuacan, Monte Alban or Xochicalco. Also, the higher parts of the basaltic spill went to the acropolis, where the structures are most important and where the leaders lived.

Cantona is considered the most urbanized city in the prehispanic Mexico. Her extensive communications network, with paved up to 1 km in length, allowing a strong control of its inhabitants. Moreover, there were walled streets that were able to close easily in case of an invasion. Developed in an era of strong social conflicts, Cantona became in time a fortress.

The large number of games identified in this city (24 so far, of which 10 are in the Acropolis) is clear evidence of the importance that was given to the religious ceremonies.
